Be aware of harvest mites in your cat's ear at this time of the year - October 2012

This is a photo of the little pouch found on the outside surface of a dog or cat's ear called HENRY'S POCKET. This is a photo of our cat Ruadh's ear. A great name we think.

It is found on the pinna of the ear so half a point for that answer. At the end of the summer/early Autumn a nasty little mite called Trombicula autumnalis (known "affectionately" as the Berry Bug) may find its way into Henry's Pocket and cause intense itching.

They are very difficult to see but if gathered in groups you can spot them as they are a bright orange colour. Some pets react very badly to these and need veterinary treatment. Contact us for further advice.
